Gladys Fox Gregory, 1944 |
We are a mother and daughter (Nancy and Andrea)
united, among the less obvious reasons, by both of us
undergoing double mastectomies for breast cancer. We
recently found out that we have the BRCA2 gene mutation.
The Wallaby is in memory of and dedicated to our
mother/grandmother, Gladys Fox Gregory, who herself
underwent breast cancer surgery twice but didn’t survive
her second bout with it. Out of great emotional and
physical need, wonderful and creative products arise.
After her surgery, Andrea was sent home with tubing and
five JP drains hanging out of her body. Nancy looked all
over for a nightgown/loungewear for Andrea that snapped
up the front so it would be easy to get in and out of
during her recovery. Additionally, Nancy looked for
something for Andrea to wear so she could entertain
visitors and hide the drains, not to mention easily
managing the constant bulb measuring and emptying. When
Andrea tried to handle the logistics of pinning five
drains to her clothing and managing them through showers
and clothing changes, the idea for this product was
born. |
